Multi Factor Authentication Setup in Office 365

Multi Factor Authentication Setup is required if your admin has enabled Multi Factor Authentication for your account.


When Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is turned on, the user has to use additional authentication method to login.


Multi Factor Authentication Setup is a one time process, once you have setup your authentication method as a user, then you can use them to login.

Steps for Microsoft Multi Factor Authentication Setup:

If you account has been enabled for Multi factor authentication, then you will have to register an alternate method from the list of method provided to you by the admin of your organization.


Open a browser and go to https://office.com and click on Sign in:

Enter your email address and click Next:

Enter you Password and click on Sign in:

It will then show you the following screen, click on Next:

Select the type of method you would want to setup as second step of verification, from the next time you login:

If you want to use Microsoft Authenticator, then Search and download the same from the Google play store or App store.


If you want to use Phone based authentication (Text message or call) then click on I want to set up a different method option.


Authenticator App option for Multi Factor Authentication Setup:

If you are using Android phone, search for Microsoft Authenticator on Google play store and download it.


If you are using an Apple IOS device, search for Microsoft Authenticator on App Store and download it.


Once it is downloaded, open it and click on Add account and select “Work or school account” and on the browser click on Next:

It will then show you a bar code, you can select scan option on the Authenticator app on your phone and scan it:

Once the scan is successful it will complete the setup.


If you are not able to scan it for some reason, you can manually add your account as a work or school account in the authenticator app.


Phone option for Microsoft Multi Factor Authentication Setup:

Click on I want to set up a different method option and then from the drop down select Phone:

Click on Confirm:

Enter your country code and your phone number and click on Next:

Enter the code received on your phone and then click on Next:

Click on Next and then click on Done on the next page to complete the setup:
